SGA Roles

This page is to give a brief look at the different roles in the Kansas State University Salina SGA and their duties. A complete list of responsibilities can be found in the Constitution (pdf).

Senators

Within the Kansas State Salina SGA's legislative branch are the Senators and the Senate Chair. Any Kansas State Salina student with at least 12 credit hours and a cumulative 2.0 gpa is eligible to become a senator.

Duties of Senators:

  • Write and propose legislation (bills, amendments, resolutions).
  • Vote on passing or failing new legislation. Senators have to know what they are voting on, so reading the legislation and minutes is also required.
  • Serve the needs of the student body. This includes, but is not limited to serving on committees, voicing the input of the student body on issues discussed within meetings, and identifying how we can help the student body (proposing legislation, perhaps).

Senate Chair

The other member of the Kansas State Salina SGA legislative branch is the Senate Chair. The Senate Chair is elected by their fellow senators, And has the primary function of presiding over the senate meetings. The Senate Chair also serves as a member of the President's cabinet.

Duties of the Senate Chair:

  • Call and preside over meetings of the K-State Salina SGA Senate. They must adhere to the latest edition of Robert's Rules of Order, the By-Laws, and any Senate Standing Rules.
  • Call special meetings of the K-State Salina SGA Senate (with at least 24 hour notice).
  • The Student Senate Chair can appoint and remove committee members for any standing committees in the K-State Salina SGA Senate.

President

At the head of the Kansas State Salina executive branch is the President. The President is elected by the student body, and must maintain 12 credit hours (with the exception of allowing six (6) hours undergraduate credit if serving the semester prior to graduation).

Duties of the President:

  • Approve or veto legislation. The senate can overrule a veto with a 2/3 majority vote.
  • Appoint cabinet members and delegate authority to those cabinet members.
  • Lead the Kansas State Salina SGA.

Vice-President

Standing by the President's side is the Vice-President. The Vice-President is elected with the President by the student body, and must maintain 12 credit hours (with the exception of allowing six (6) hours undergraduate credit if serving the semester prior to graduation).

Duties of the Vice-President:

  • Serve as the Chair of the Educational Opportunity Fund Committee.
  • Appoint and remove committee members for any standing committees in the K-State Salina SGA Senate.
  • Oversee and coordinate special projects and programs of the Student Governing Association, as assigned by the Student Body President (overseeing clubs on Campus).

Attorney General

Heading the Kansas State Salina SGA is the Attorney General. The Attorney General is appointed by the President, and their term does not end until they have a replacement. The Attorney General also serves as a member of the President's cabinet, and the head of the judicial branch.

Duties of the Attorney General:

  • Appoint a Judicial Board, and train the justices.
    • The Judicial Board hears and votes on cases of violations of Student Code of Conduct.
  • Interpret the rules at senate meetings at the request of the Senate Chair.

Cabinet Positions

Treasurer

The Treasurer is the person clubs go to to request money. They serve as a liaison between the allocations committee and the senate and groups requesting funds.

Duties of the Treasurer:

  • Preside over the Allocations committee
  • Facilitate the allocation of the student activity fee.
  • Present a budget report at least once a semester.

Secretary

The Secretary is in charge of recording the meeting minutes for each senate meeting, producing a well-documented record of what is accomplished during each meeting.

Duties of the Secretary:

  • Record and publish the K-State Salina SGA Senate minutes in a timely manner.
  • Record attendance and communicate with the Senate.
  • Make a difference!

Webmaster

The Webmaster is in charge of the Kansas State Salina website.

Duties of the Webmaster:

  • Update SGA website (and post weekly minutes).
  • Oversee the campus improvement survey.
  • Livestream/record senate meetings.

Programming Board Chair

The Programming Board Chair is responsible for presiding over the Programming Board and coordinating with them to host/plan events for the campus.

Duties of the Programming Board Chair:

  • Run the Programming Board
  • Plan events for the student body. Examples in the past include Grocery Bingo and Casino Night.

Campus Affairs Director

The Campus Affairs Director is in charge of ensuring that all student on campus feel welcome, and protect the rights of the students.

Duties of the Campus Affairs Director:

  • Organize at least 1 multicultural event per semester.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Kansas State Salina SGA and all cultures on campus, expressing the concerns they may have.
