The CIT Program provides the following methods for obtaining certification.

1. Profilograph Course and Exam

Online course with exam included - course and exam are online and access is available upon registration. The course is available year round with the course period designated in your registration confirmation email and the CanvasPro course page. You must complete the course and subsequent exam(s) by the stated completion date in your confirmation email and in CanvasPro. This option is required for initial certification. The written exam can be taken and submitted one time. It can be taken at the student’s location and requires an approved proctor. Registration is necessary if a retake is needed.
Prerequisite: Pass the Basic Math exam prior to taking the online course.

2. Profilograph Recertification Exam

The recertification option allows a person to take the written exam for recertification without attending class. This option is recommended for individuals who have at least five years experience. The exam is online and available upon registration. The exam is available year round with the exam period designated in your registration confirmation email and the CanvasPro exam page. You must complete the exam by the stated completion date in your confirmation email and in CanvasPro.The exam can be taken and submitted one time. It can be taken at the student’s location and requires an approved proctor. Registration is necessary if a retake is needed.

Course Objective

The Kansas Department of Transportation requires this course for persons operating manual and computerized profilographs on roadway surfaces.

Michelle Anschutz - KDOT Field Engineering Administrator D1, Area 4

Michelle received her BA in management and design from Washburn University in 1986 and decided to follow her families chosen path of public service. She began working in Transportation in 1988 as an inspector of materials at the Materials and Research Laboratory for Kansas Department of Transportation while she attended KU. After she received her BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas in 1991, she began working as a Project Engineer for KDOT in northeast Kansas, then promoted to a Construction Engineer in 1993, received her professional engineering license in 2001, and in 2015 became the Field Engineering Administrator for the metropolitan cities of Topeka, Emporia and Lawrence and the surrounding counties. Michelle directs engineering and inspection staff to ensure compliance with all regulations both federal and state and contract requirements in these metro areas on complex urban interstate, freeway, and locally sponsored construction projects. She has taught several CIT classes through her career and also is a Certified Public Manager. She is an avid reader and loves spending time with her family.

  • Determine the smoothness of a pavement using a profilograph.
  • Examine a California-type profilograph.
  • Study a sample profile of a highway.
  • Evaluate the smoothness of a pavement using a bump template and blanking band.
  • Determine whether corrective methods must be taken.
  • Study the schedule for adjusted payment.
  • Reduce a trace to discover bump/dip locations.
  • Learn to use DOT form 242m Report of pavement smoothness.
  • Examine DOT form 242C Adjustment for pavement trueness.

Testing Information

  • Exam: The class and recertification options requires a written exam and a performance exam.
  • Score: A score of 70% or higher is needed to pass.
