QC/QA Asphalt Specifications

The CIT Program provides the following methods for obtaining certification.

1. QC/QA Asphalt Specifications Course

Online course with exam included - course and exam are online and access is available upon registration. The course is available year round with the course period designated in your registration confirmation email and the CanvasPro course page. You must complete the course and subsequent exam(s) by the stated completion date in your confirmation email and in CanvasPro. This option is required for initial certification. The written exam can be taken and submitted one time. It can be taken at the student’s location and requires an approved proctor. Registration is necessary if a retake is needed.
Prerequisite: Pass the Basic Math exam and the Statistics exam prior to enrolling in the online course.

2. QC/QA Asphalt Specifications Recertification Exam

The recertification option allows a person to take the written exam for recertification without attending class. This option is recommended for individuals who have at least five years experience. The exam is online and available upon registration. The exam is available year round with the exam period designated in your registration confirmation email and the CanvasPro exam page. You must complete the exam by the stated completion date in your confirmation email and in CanvasPro.The exam can be taken and submitted one time. It can be taken at the student’s location and requires an approved proctor.

Registration is necessary if a retake is needed.

Course Description

This satisfies part of the requirements for the Superpave Field certification for the engineers, technicians and other personnel who are involved in the construction of Superpave hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements using Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QC/QA) specifications in the State of Kansas. It is required for at least one person working for KDOT and one person working for the contractor on a Superpave project to be certified. These certifications are necessary for all KDOT Superpave projects.

Blair Heptig - Field Materials Engineer

Blair is a 2006 graduate of Baker University with a BS in Chemistry and Mathematics and a 2006 graduate of KU with a BS in Civil Engineering. Blair began working at KDOT as an intern at age 19 and transitioned to full time employment upon graduation. Currently, he is the Field Materials Engineer in the Bureau of Construction and Materials where he specializes in asphalt materials, construction and pavement preservation.

Learning Objectives

  • Introduction to the quality control/quality assurance (aspects) for Superpave HMA construction
  • Contractor quality control requirements
  • Review and use of KDOT’s QC/QA specifications for Superpave HMA construction on 1-R and major modification projects
  • Superpave HMA QC/QA data interpretation for pay factor computation
  • Use of software in pay factor computation
  • All instructions will be provided in English units.

Testing Information

  • Exam: This course requires a written exam.
  • Score: A score of 70% or higher is needed to pass.
