ACI Concrete Field Tester

The CIT Program provides the following methods for obtaining certification.

1. ACI Concrete Field Tester Technician course

Course options include:

Online course - course is online and available upon registration. The course is available to you year round with the course period designated in your registration confirmation email and the CanvasPro course page. You must complete the course and subsequent exam(s) by the stated completion date in your confirmation email and in CanvasPro. Written and performance exams are administered in Salina, KS.

In Person course - three day course instructed in Salina, KS and written and performance exams are administered on the last day.

Quiz Out option - recommended for those who have at least 5 years experience. No class time is offered, only the written and performance exams are given in Salina, KS.

The ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Workbook will not be provided by K-State and must be purchased by the student online through ACI. The ACI workbook does not include the ASTM standards that you will be tested on. If you wish to purchase the ASTM's you can go to the ASTM website or the ANSI Webstore.

The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM test methods and practices:

  • C1064/C1064M – 17—Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
  • C172/C172M – 17—Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
  • C143/C143M – 15a—Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
  • C138/C138M – 17a—Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
  • C231/C231M – 17a—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
  • C173/C173M – 16—Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
  • C31/C31M – 19—Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field

Prerequisite: Pass Basic Math test prior to enrolling for the course.

Course Description

The Kansas Department of Transportation requires this course for persons testing concrete in the field.

Learning Objectives

  • Sample freshly mixed concrete.
  • Determine the unit weight, yield, slump of concrete.
  • Use a pressure meter to determine the air content of fresh concrete.
  • Use a roll-a-meter to determine the air content of freshly mixed concrete by the volumetric method.
  • Make and cure concrete test specimens.
  • Determine the temperature of freshly mixed Portland Cement Concrete.

Testing Information

  • Exam: The class and quiz out options require a written exam and a performance exam.
  • Score: A score of 60% on each portion of the written exam plus a 70% overall score is required to pass. Failure on any part of the written exam requires a full retest. Failure on any performance sub test requires retest on the entire performance exam.
