UAS Fire and HAZMAT Response Training

Developed with an input from local and county fire response officials, this program will result in attendees acquiring the skills necessary to operate UAS for fire and HAZMAT emergency response. Utilizing K-State's industry-leading technology, pilots will learn the best ways to incorporate UAS into their fire and emergency response agencies. Simulated scenarios of a structure fire, highway accident and train derailment will take place at Crisis City Training Center.

What to Expect

During this course, pilots will receive extensive hands-on flight training, accumulating to roughly 8 hours. Schedules will vary depending on companies sending a single participant or sending two participants. Course Dates and Registration

Please contact Professional Education and Outreach for course dates, registration and a quote. Typically, the course is held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily with adjusted times on the last day for night operation modules. The course will be 3 days for two participants from the same company and 2 days for a single participant. Course fee is approximately $1,775 and includes course instruction, course materials and notes, and lunch daily. A discounted price of $1,249 per person is available for companies sending two participants. Aircraft Rental options can be found under course details. Additional meals, travel and lodging are not included in the registration fee and are the responsibility of the attendee.

Module options

The following flight training modules are included in the course:

Fundamental and advanced flight maneuvers using a DJI Matrice 210 aircraft and various sensors
Structure fire recon and overwatch with simulated occupant and thermal hotspot detection
HAZMAT scene response with simulated vehicle and tanker accident and train derailment
Search and rescue scenarios
Night operations
Crew resource management and coordination between teams
Operational scenarios using multiple aircraft and crews, identifying secondary hazards and maintaining command of incident scenes

In addition to flight training, attendees will also learn best practices for UAS operations, FAA regulatory guidance for fire and emergency response departments and software tools for extracting actionable information from UAS operations. Templates and guidance for developing operations, including standard operating procedures and night operation waivers, is also included.
